AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2010

Having a mind that is at peace with itself,
a mind that is clear and joyous,
is the basis of happiness and compassion

Perspective

We humans are pretty great at losing perspective. The middle of winter, and we know it's not going to be this dark forever, not even for another couple of months, but it can get us down. Then summer comes and all we want is a cool breeze and a dark night by the fire with a good book.

In college we had to write a paper defining "poetry," and the professor made the point that any definition must make a fence around a word. It must tell us what goes inside the fence and what belongs outside. In other words, the only way to know what something is is to also know what it
is not.

The glass can only be half full if it is also half empty. And a glass brimming over all the time is just making a big puddle--you'll probably forget how great the plenty is if you're always stuck mopping up the extra.
